Google Ads Performance Max: The New Generation of Ads

How Google Performance Max campaigns are set up, in which situations they're effective, and how they differ from classic Search campaigns.

Google Ads Performance Max Advertising

The biggest change in Google Ads over the last two years is Performance Max (PMax). It unites the Search, Display, YouTube and Discover channels under a single campaign, with the algorithm optimizing. But setting up PMax correctly takes a very different mindset from classic search.

01. What Does PMax Do?

Classic search: you set the keywords and place bids. PMax: you provide goals and assets, and Google automatically selects the keyword, channel and bid.

This approach means algorithm optimization instead of human optimization. You lose a small amount of partial control but gain scale.

Situations where PMax is strong:

  • E-commerce (especially combined with Shopping)
  • A broad target audience
  • Enough data (a high conversion count)

Situations where Search is strong:

  • Niche product / service
  • Local business
  • Small data (the algorithm can't be fed enough)

03. Asset Group Preparation

The one place with manual control in PMax: assets. The higher-quality the images, videos and text you enter, the better PMax performs. A standard of 5+ images, 3+ videos, 5+ headlines, 3+ descriptions.

04. Measurement Limits

The biggest criticism of PMax: how much each keyword brings in isn't clearly visible. Google only gives "campaign-level" data. Those who want detail should run Search campaigns in parallel; a PMax + Search hybrid model is optimal in most scenarios.
