01. What It Changes
Previously Data Factory, Synapse, Databricks and Power BI were set up separately and data was copied between them. Fabric gathers them onto one surface and has them all use the same storage.
02. The Components
Data Factory moves data, Synapse Data Engineering transforms it, Data Warehouse covers the SQL side, Real-Time Intelligence handles streaming, and Power BI visualises. All under one roof.
03. OneLake
The heart of the platform. All data sits in one logical lake in the open Delta format. Different engines read the same data without copying it. Most storage cost and freshness problems are solved here.
04. The Licensing Model
It's sold by capacity. You pay for compute power, not user count. Small capacities are affordable, but once capacity is full jobs queue; capacity planning becomes a critical management task.
05. Who It Suits
Firms pulling data from multiple sources, using Power BI heavily and having a data team. If you have a few reports fed by a single ERP, moving to Fabric adds unnecessary complexity.
06. Is Migration Mandatory
No. Power BI Pro licences keep working. Fabric is a step up you take when needs grow; it isn't a forced migration.
